What does "indigenous people" mean?

The following is the United Nations definition:

"...those people having an historical continuity with pre-invasion and pre-colonial societies, consider themselves distinct from other sectors of the societies now prevailing in those territories or parts of them. They form at present non-dominant sectors of society and are determined to preserve, develop and transmit to future generations, their ancestral territories, and their ethnic identity, as the basis of their continued existence as peoples in accordance with their own cultural patterns, social institutions, and legal systems."


How do I qualify to take part in the Games?

Contact the Chef de Mission from your region of the continent to qualify. (See contact list of Chefs de Mission.)


How do I sign up to volunteer for the Games?

The volunteer drive for the 2002 NAIG will kick off with the recruitment launch in the fall of 2001! Stay posted for details.


Do I have to be Aboriginal to volunteer for the Games?

Absolutely not! The 2002 NAIG is looking for people from all walks of life to get involved with the various divisions for volunteering. The only requirement is enthusiasm!

Where do you get your money?

The 2002 NAIG has received funding from the three levels of government – Canada, the Province of Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg. There is also a monetary fee that the athletes must provide on their own to take part in the Games. Corporate sponsorship is one other means of support the 2002 NAIG are receiving.
